Planned water supply maintenance from 21 to 22 January 2025

The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate will be doing planned work in the identified areas, which will result in water supply disruption. This critical maintenance work is done on our water-supply infrastructure to benefit customers. Residents in the affected areas are encouraged to take note of the work that will take place and prepare accordingly.

pipe and valve installations, repairs and replacements
Residents are advised to store
enough water in advance, as a precautionary measure. Water should be
stored in clean, sealed containers.
Planned maintenance work will
result in water supply disruption to these areas:
Parts of Kommetjie
The water supply to parts of
the Kommetjie area will be shut off from 08:00 until 17:00 on Tuesday, 21
January 2025. This will allow the maintenance team to install control
valves on the water supply network at the intersection of Huskisson Way and
Erica Road and at the intersection of Huskisson Way and Crassula Road, Kommetjie.
The area affected by the shut-off will be Van Imhoff Way, Erica Road, Dreyer
Road, Lighthouse Road, Protea, Disa, Nerina and Clan Monroe Avenues and Aloe
Road, Kommetjie. Affected consumers are kindly requested to store enough
water in clean, sealed containers in advance.
Garden City - Mfuleni
The water supply to the Garden
City area in Mfuleni will be shut off from 09:00 until 16:00 on Tuesday, 21
January 2025. This will allow the maintenance team to connect the newly
installed pipeline to the existing water supply infrastructure. A water tanker
will be roaming through the area to provide water for domestic use where
required. Affected residents are kindly advised to store water in clean,
sealed containers ahead of the disruption to ensure adequate supply.
Bloekoembos and Wallacedene – Kraaifontein
The Wemmershoek Water Treatment
Plant (WTP) will be reducing its water production to 100 million litres per day
from 08:00 until 16:00 on Tuesday, 21 January 2025. This will allow the
maintenance team to do essential maintenance during this period. The
Kraaifontein pipeline connection to Bloekombos and Wallacedene will be affected
and these residents need to reduce their water consumption during this period.
The City’s reservoirs in the northern areas will be filled in advance. The
Drakenstein and Stellenbosch Municipalities as well as private consumers
along the Wemmershoek pipeline have been informed to make the necessary
preparations. Affected residents are kindly advised to store water in
clean, sealed containers ahead of the disruption to ensure adequate supply.
Fisantekraal, Fisantekraal
Wastewater Treatment Works and High School
The water supply to these areas
will be shut off from 09:00 until 16:00 on Tuesday, 21 January 2025.
This will allow for the repairs to a leak on a pipeline connected to the water
supply main for the area. Water tankers will be made available to provide water
for domestic use where required. Affected residents are kindly advised to
store water in clean, sealed containers ahead of the disruption to ensure
adequate supply.
Various parts of Glencairn
The City’s Water and Sanitation
Directorate will be shutting off the water supply to various roads in
Glencairn, from 08:00 until 18:00 on Tuesday, 21 January 2025. This will
enable the safe completion of construction work on the main water supply to the
area and will result in the disruption of water supply to various roads,
Glencairn. The work involves the transferring of leadings onto the
temporary bypass for water supply for the duration of the water pipeline
replacement in Cockburn and Camilla Streets, Glencairn. Areas affected by the
shut-off are alongside Cockburn and Camilla Streets, Birkenhead Road,
Tercentenary Way and surrounds. Affected residents are kindly advised to
store water in clean, sealed containers ahead of the disruption to ensure
adequate supply.
Part of Green Point
The water supply to the area
bounded by Bree Street, Riebeeck Street, Somerset Road, Ebenezer Road
(including the Gallows Hill Traffic Department) and Helen Suzman Boulevard will
be shut off from 09:00 until 18:00 on Wednesday, 22 January 2025. This
includes Ebenezer Road, Prestwich, Middle, Napier, Alfred, Hospital, Chiappini,
Mechau, Cobern and Buitengracht Streets. The roads and buildings on the
mountain side of Somerset Road will not be impacted. This will allow the
maintenance team to repair a leak on the main water supply pipeline to the
affected area. Affected residents and businesses are kindly advised to store
water in clean, sealed containers ahead of the disruption to ensure adequate
supply.
This work forms part of the Water and Sanitation
Directorate’s proactive infrastructure maintenance and upgrade programme, which
ensures the future continuity of water supply by addressing the issue of
unaccounted for water.

What residents need to know about larger-scale planned water supply disruptions: - Careful consideration has been given to the planning of this work to ensure it is being done at a time that is least disruptive to the water supply.
- All sites where water and sanitation repairs and upgrades are conducted are deemed to be construction sites and, as such, are off-limits to members of the public.
- Sometimes the maintenance work can be more complex than anticipated, which means the work could take longer.
- For a short period after the supply has been restored, the water may be discoloured or look milky. This is because of trapped air in the pipes. If left to stand in a glass, the appearance will become clear, like normal.
